(With reference to The Straits Times dated 13 July 2015 – ‘Third Choice’ school turns out to be the best.)
Indeed, I understand and fully agree with the sentiments of these parents.
If you have not already read my blog 3 years ago (Dec 2012 – My Dearest Brother), I would like to share about my third brother who had his education in a ‘branded’ school prior to his posting to a neighbourhood school after his PSLE. At that time, the family thought it was ‘the end of the world’ but we were so wrong…
He was posted to Mayflower Secondary in Ang Mo Kio where his teachers nurtured his potential and inspired him. He was transformed from a quiet and reserved boy into one who is vocal and self-assured. They brought out the best in him. He thrived in the environment; something which probably might not happen had he continued his education in a top school.
He eventually became the Head Prefect of the school and also the Basketball team Captain. Academically, he went on to ace the GCE O-levels in ALL the seven subjects he took, earning a place in a top junior college and later becoming a scholar in university. The rest is history…
Indeed, as our Education Minister has mentioned, “every school is a good school in Singapore”. What’s most important is the child enjoys his environment that inevitably facilitates his learning and development.
